Geometries of the South / Geometrias del Sur / Installation, 2021.

Relate modern rational abstraction to a territory or how an abstract element is linked to a geography is the central problem of this work. Sixteen plastic boxes and the same number of works made on paper with airbrush make up this installation.

When you say "Geometry of the South" it can be related to the “ Escuela del Sur” (School of the South) created by Joaquín Torres García ( Montevideo, Uruguay, 1874-1949) where it was intended to configure a referential map for the production of modern art from Latin America. Through pre-Hispanic art as a reference and using geometry it was intended to create a rational and universal paradigm for a true modern Latin American art.

Almost a century after these ideas arise, I am interested in pointing out another form of geometry that is related to the “South". But now the "South" in a context of globalized trade. The visual result of this work done on paper remains abstract geometric and the installation of plastic boxes on the wall show both the graphic process and the origin of the boxes. These plastic boxes that are used to transport food for export; especially fruits and vegetables from southern countries, understanding this cardinal point (South) as one of many that can exist in relation to a country, a continent and the world.

In this case, the plastic boxes transport imported products from the South of Latin America, others are products from the south of Spain, others are from Africa, south of the European continent. So it is a south that can be anywhere, it is a south that moves, a south that only exists because of the dependence and needs of the north.
